Virginia Primary Election, June 9th

Just a reminder for registered voters in Virginia, there is a very important primary coming up on June 9th, and you should go vote.

Every registered voter in the state can have a say in who will get the Democratic Party nomination for Governor, Lt Governor, and in many districts – delegate for that district. The Republicans have decided not to have any primary races this year (except for House of Delegates races in districts 17, 23, and 55), so I am sure there will be lots of Republicans voting in the Democratic Primary to either have their say.

There is a three way race for the Democratic Nomination for Governor; a two way race for Lt Governor; and a few house districts have primary battles too.

I am hoping you will all vote for Creigh Deeds and Michael Signer; but frankly any vote is welcome. Historically the primary following a US Presidential election gets the lowest turnout of all Virginia elections, so your vote counts far more than usual.

This primary, and the general election in November are very important as the winners of these elections will preside over the next redistricting effort post the 2010 US Census. Do not be apathetic!

Minibar Experience

Erci and I went to Minibar on Wednesday night, and had a fantastic dining adventure. She shared her detailed thoughts and the menu, and I commented over at: http://sutragirl.livejournal.com/79317.html

LiveJournal has a funny “adult content” warning on her blog because she once posted some mild language, but this review is G-rated and safe for all readers. Enjoy.

Looking for work

Suddenly I find myself unemployed and looking for a new position as a Linux/UNIX Sysadmin.

Update: I was in the bunch of people with apparently redundant skills: http://www.playlist.com/blog/entry/12417807875.

By the lobbyists for the corporations…

For years now I have picked up and repeated the Adbusters/BuyNothing crowd’s chant of “by the lobbyists for the corporations” as a cynical replacement of “by the people for the people” that we were taught in school when I grew up.

Larry Lessig gives a brilliant presentation on exactly why this change has been so bad for our democracy, and why we, all of us, need to stand up and speak out together to get our democracy back on track.

As much as I am glad the blatant corruption of the neocons is out of power, we must take responsibility and encourage the current administration not to be corrupted by the power of their offices. We must challenge President Obama to repair our nation and get back to the Jeffersonian ideals of “by the people and for the people” by dismantling the economy of influence that money buys.

Hat tip to Mark Blacknell.

Kalamazoo was fun and educational, good to be home

We got back really late last night or early this morning. Ichseke and PaleoBob will drive home from here today. ThatPotteryGuy is a fantastic traveling companion, PenguinInArmor shall henceforth be known as “that insufferable celebrity” as he was recognized everywhere we went once he and PaleoBob had done their demonstration of medieval combat in armor. It was great to see Shalmestere and JS again.

This was the year of the cancelled papers in most sessions, and also the congress of “in honor of” papers given by students of or colleagues of historians who have passed on. The 14th Century Society came into it’s own with three sessions of excellent papers that drew large crowds, and the Society of the White Hart and Distaff continued to draw large crowds for their many sessions (several Distaff presentations were overflowing to the point of being a safety concern; the congress really needs to give them larger rooms to use).

More later, just wanted folks to know we got back safely (at least this far) and that we are exhausted and filled with both joy, and plenty of new books!

XKCD and Firefly, together again and again

If you are a Firefly / Serenity fan you will love the most recent several XKCD comics, they are all Firefly/Serenity themed…

In other news, if you like Felicia Day from Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, you might also like her web video series called The Guild where she stars in and created a video series satire of World of Warcraft players/addicts.

Creigh Deeds is my choice for Virginia in 2009

Virginia has state office elections in odd years, which allows voters to focus on those elections and not get distracted by national elections, but it also means turnout is always really low because voters are tired from the previous year’s national election and unwilling to invest the time and effort.

Virginia’s state-wide elections this year are very important for they will determine who is in office when the redistricting happens after next years decade end census; and districting has a huge impact on who ends up in office both nationally and for state offices for the next decade.

I decided months ago that while Bob McDonnell (R) is horribly unacceptable for any office, let alone Governor of Virginia (he is a theocrat trying to pretend he’s a moderate), I cannot, even against McDonnell, support Terry McAuliffe (D) in his bid for the office of Governor even if he wins the Democratic Primary. Terry McAuliffe does not appear to have any integrity at all and I trust him only to do what is good for Terry. He is charming and has raised enormous sums of money, but I don’t trust him at all. Which is worse, trusting someone to do the wrong thing every time (McDonnell) or total unpredictability (McAuliffe)? Anyway, neither gets any support from me though I suppose Terry can get my vote (reluctantly) if he wins the Primary on June 9th.

I decided weeks ago to support Creigh Deeds over Brian Moran because Criegh has a better shot of winning against McDonnell in the November election, and because Criegh is more pragmatic and in tune with Virginia right now. I very much like BOTH Deeds and Moran, they would both make excellent governors, and I will happily vote and support either if they win the Primary on June 9th; but I think Deeds is a better choice at this time.

This was not an easy choice, they are both very good. I prefer Moran’s positions on equality. I prefer Deeds’ positions on the right to bear arms. I think Moran would upset too many people and cause what little cooperation we have in Richmond to get sidelined with sensationalist causes that cannot be won in our conservative state right now anyway. I am also a little mad at him for giving up a delegate’s seat to run for Governor (we need the house to have sanity more than we need the state senate to, the state senate is already barely rational – the house is a disaster).

I am a slacker for not posting about this sooner; been a little distracted with personal job/life issues.

Please support Creigh Deeds in the June primary and again in the November General Election, he is the best choice for the job, and is the only one acceptable for all of Virginia.

Saw a few new iPhone apps on the news this morning

Saw a few new iPhone apps on the news this morning, and some are actually interesting (as opposed to fun sound-bites with zero value). I have no experience with the following applications, just found the concepts interesting…

Free Applications:
bump allows exchange of contact info with another iphone with bump by bumping iphones/hands – business card info exchange

dating dna social networking and dating site with a twist, it tracks your location and the location of other members and lets you know who is nearby and compatible, potential stalker scenario, but could be interesting

Paid Applications:
$0.99 aSmart HUD shows speed, and driving info in reverse, so you put phone on dash to see reflection in windshield as heads up display; they even have an upgrade that claims to warn of traffic cameras ahead…

Of course, that brings up the question of which Applications I am using now, and here is the stuff I use most often:

Applications that came with my iPhone:
SMS, Phone, Mail, Safari, iPod, YouTube, Camera, Photos, Calendar, Notes, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Clock, Contacts

Free Applications:
Remote (controls iTunes on my computer via the phone)
Facebook (interactive), Shazam (name that tune)
Yelp (business reviews)
AIM (need one that does jabber and yahoo and gtalk too)
Animoto (make video slideshows of your photos)
A Free Level (actually a useful level tool!)
WordPress (post updates to blog from phone)
WikiPanion (web interface to wikipedia, faster than Safari for WikiPedia lookups)
WorldWiki (off-line copy of national information about many countries)
LiveJournal (post updates to journal from phone)
FS5 Hockey (air hockey!)
Google Earth

Paid:
iSSH (ssh connections to my server)
AirSharing (file transfers over wifi)

The iPhone is a fantastic success as a phone. It is also a fantastic success as a mobile computer. The iTunes Application Store is a horrible failure at point users to something useful…. There needs to be a way to see if any useful applications have been developed to solve a problem, and right now you need the name of an application to search for it.

About the current flu scare

I just wanted to share this link that puts things into perspective:

http://www.fark.com/cgi/comments.pl?IDBlog=76

Yes this outbreak, which is less lethal than the normal influenza we have in the United States every day has pushed aside all the breaking news of Bush and Cheney’s authorization and endorsement of the use of torture to falsely implicate Iraq in the attack of September 11th, 2001.
