Cirque du Soleil in September

My brilliant and sexy bride has scored a batch of tickets to Cirque du Soleil: OVO for the September 11th show. She rocks. OVO is all about bugs… could be interesting.

I have loved every Cirque show we’ve gone to, and never regretted the ticket price, even proportionally… and I am a stingy man. I am so stingy that I remember being glad someone else paid for our $80 tickets to see Blue Man Group; which I also loved, but I did not love them $80 worth… perhaps $60 worth and I’d have been happy). Cirque tickets are more than Blue Man Group, but always worth every penny and Cirque always manages to expand my definition of humanity and what it is possible for humans to do.

Having said that, there are stand out Cirque shows amongst the greatness of them all, my favorites are: Ka (visually stunning theatrics and a dual themed story arc of twins and war), Mystere (big drums, childhood, growing up), Quidam (lonelyness in a crowd, broken families, dreams), and Saltimbanco (amazing acrobatics and music; so amazing this show has been traveling for more than a decade and then some).

Weekend in New York with La Belle Compagnie

We had a lovely weekend museum hopping in New York with La Belle Compagnie and enjoying the hospitality and cooking of Deb and Steve.

The museum hopping started at The Morgan Library and Museum where we got to see a Magna Carta on display. We spent a lot of time perusing the digital archive of two earlier exhibits on their information kiosks. Demons and Devotion: The Hours of Catherine of Cleves is fabulous and has many gorgeous illuminations created in about 1440. Zoom in on the following and count the medieval items you want to build:

Illuminating the Medieval Hunt was also still online, and it is full of early images of hunting.

We had an excellent lunch at Woo Chon and then continued the museum hopping at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy (this exhibit is traveling and will be in Richmond in January, 2012 and is awesome for anyone interested in beautiful sculpture or 15th century clothing and accessories) and The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry. We have big reproduction copies of the Belles Heures, but when you look at the original pages with a magnifying glass additional details pop out at you and become clear. The Limbourg brothers and their crew were amazing artists. I was also excited to catch Five Thousand Years of Japanese Art: Treasures from the Packard Collection and wandered through a few other exhibits for the fun of it.

Gardening

We’ve been gardening this Spring, and have potatoes, tomatoes, a variety of basil and lettuce, cilantro, onions, thyme, rosemary, eggplant, squash, corn, fennel, spinach, and oregano put in already. The fig tree appears to be doing well.

Pictures after the fold…

Jealous of the United Kingdom

I confess I am a bit jealous that the United Kingdom enjoys a Conservative Party that is willing to accept modern realities and even compromise with moderates on important national issues. I am not a huge fan of the Tories, but they can at least be reasonable and be reasoned with. What went wrong in the United States that our conservative party became such uncompromising extremists? Can the Libertarians take the mainstream conservative party status away from the Republicans, please? Pretty please?

Andrei Codrescu’s essay on Arizona’s new immigration laws

I think Andrei Codrescu has a really good take on the recent insanity from Arizona in immigration:

Thanks Andrei for keeping things in perspective.

Tax bills in 2009 at lowest level since 1950

What are all those “Tea Party” folks up in arms about again?

http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2010-05-10-taxes_N.htm

Yet more proof that we are about as far away from socialism as we’ve ever been, which is a sad thing, as socialism is literally caring for those around you.

So I guess the search for what is really making all the “Tea Party” crowd upset continues as their claims continue to be proved dishonest or disingenuous one by one.

City and Town Elections Tomorrow, May 4th

Clifton, Herndon, Vienna, and apparently Falls Church all have town elections tomorrow, May 4th.

Review Tornado Response Drills

It is Spring, and therefore a really good time to review your tornado response drills with your family.

This weekend’s weather forecast for most of the Mississippi and Ohio river watershed areas (huge part of the United States) calls for severe storms with a counter-rotating wind pattern that looks a lot like the historic one of April 3rd, 1974. I think it is very important for you to keep an eye on the weather this weekend and review your drills today (before the weekend) if you live anywhere between Texas and Ohio, Alabama and Minnesota.

I am having trouble verifying what I saw on television earlier, but it is always safe to be prepared and run through your drills regularly.

Be safe people.
