Used Love Seat, Free to a Good Home

This is a cheap La-Z-Boy brand love seat that has been in our family room for a year or so. The recliner mechanics have failed, so it is love seat only unless you feel like repairing it. Our house has two gentle cats, so if you have allergies to cats you’ll want to steam clean it. No scratching on the furniture though, so the fabric is in excellent condition.

The fabric is a very complex blend of colors so this love seat matches all kinds of colors in your room and is very chameleon like; it averages out to brown in our house, but may change slightly next to reds or blues or golds.

Free if you can come pick it up.

Update: It is already claimed.

Marching Through Time

Just spreading the word that this weekend (April 18th and 19th) there will be a living history timeline event at Marietta Mansion (5626 Bell Station Road, Glenn Dale, MD) that is open to the public for a nominal fee ($8/adult, $5/ages 5 & older, FREE/4 & under) from 11am to 5pm both days. A timeline event is one in which there are many groups of living history interpreters and/or re-enactors organized into small groups where each group is interpreting a different time. Groups will be there representing Romans, Vikings, Medievals, Tudors, American Revolution, Napoleonics, American Civil War, both World Wars, and many other periods. The manor house itself is interesting as well, and weather is expected to be great.

La Belle Compagnie will be there, and I will be with La Belle. Come on out and see a fun event and learn a little history. Children and students of history generally love these events.

Printable flyer with directions.

Hat tip to CharGirlGenius for the reminder to get out the word.

Save the Rich! Tea-baggers explained…

So after weeks of Faux News media hype and pushing of these events, after millions spent advertising and preparing for the “Tea Parties” – only a few hundred show up at most parties and a few thousand at a few. Furthermore, the participants appeared to have difficulty staying on message and stating any facts correctly.

Seems like giant advertising FAIL to me….

Here is an explanation in case you missed the whole thing on your way to file your tax returns:

Bigotry no Sanction, Persecution no Assistance

I believe those are the words of George Washington, who recognized that our democracy would not survive on tolerance only, that we needed liberty. We cannot tolerate the intolerant, which appears on a shallow level to be an oxymoron, but on a deeper level is a fundamental and self-evident truth. Fear is a mind-killer. Fear paralyzes progress and sometimes even the quest for survival. We cannot allow the intolerant to spread their bigotry and fear, we must, if we value our democracy, challenge the intolerant and the fear mongering wherever it starts.

The United States of America is not, and never has been a theocracy. We cannot allow that to happen. Faith is not faith if it is the only choice. For people to be free to have faith, they also need to be free to have no faith or a different faith. Without that freedom, it is not faith at all.

Huge hat tip to The Group News Blog (in honor of the amazing Steve Gilliard). Very interesting reading on a regular basis.

New Garden Beds

We had Merrifield Garden Center come put in new garden beds for fruits, vegetables, and some decorative plants along the back side of our garage. They did a fantastic job as you can see by these photos.

MobileMe Gallery of new garden beds

We plan to grow figs, tomatoes, corn, lettuce, broccoli, Thai bird chili peppers, squash, and other things. Merrifield put in the fig tree, and around back two laurels and a lilac. We’ll have to deer proof aggressively with mesh and poles, but that will be fun.

Danger in those Tiny URLs

David Weiss writes a thoughtful and well researched analysis of the potential security risks of shortened URLs should they become ubiquitous. It is well worth a read:

The Security Implications of URL Shortening Services

Shortened URLs hide the destination site from the viewer until they’ve visited the potentially malicious site, they bypass SPAM filters and Safe browsing features. They are only necessary in twitter and twitter-like short messages; and twitter could easily compact long URLs automatically and re-expand them for display.

This computer security alert was brought to you by the letter H and the numbers 3 and 9.

Wow, this makes me a little sad

SGI being sold to Rackable for $25 million

Silicon Graphics is being sold for $25 million; which is in some ways astonishing for a company that had $4 billion in revenue only 12 years ago – but in other ways no surprise at all. They leapt whole-sale onto the ill-fated Itanium bandwagon and ignored customer cries not to do it. Then they failed to market their excellent software into a world of faster and cheaper Windows and Mac desktops and laptops that quickly surpassed UNIX Workstation performance.

I have many fond memories of Irix, XLV/XVM, XFS, Showcase (still the best damned presentation software on planet), and Performance Co-Pilot visualization. Aside from Showcase, it was all surpassed slowly over time as SGI tried to make Itanium work in a world where cheaper and faster commodity server hardware made Itanium unnecessary. Multi-media handling abilities are still excellent, though running Irix exposed to the internet is a dangerous undertaking these days (too many security holes).

Will someone please buy the IP rights to Showcase and make it available on both Mac and Windows? It shames PowerPoint and Keynote to oblivion even on obsolete hardware and OS… imagine what it could do on a modern laptop…

Likewise, someone could pick up and market Performance Co-Pilot visualization to the rest of the world – that would be interesting. Update: looks like SGI released it! Awesome!

Anyone want to buy two SGI O200 boxes cray-linked into a single 4 processor server with 2GB of ram and a tray of 10 FCAL drives at 10GB each (10,000rpm)? Really cheap!

New Dance Studio in Kingstowne

If you are near Kingstowne/Franconia/Alexandria Virginia, and you are interested in ballroom dance, check out An Evening of Dance run by a friend and fantastic dance teacher. His rates are very good, and I wish we were a little closer to his new studio. Tell Darrick I sent you and perhaps I can come visit for a social dance party some time.
