Rant about Oracle 11G

It’s not an alert nor error log file if it is encoded in XML format!!!!! Oracle’s 11G listener drops xml rather than plain text log files, yet their engineers will ask you to go find the plain text logs which are now hidden in a new trace directory…. eye roll.

Wow – Virtualization via Xen is awesome!

We’ve been virtualizing our systems where I work for months now. OpenSuSE 11 with Xen virtualization and many OpenSuSE virtual servers on each physical server. Today that paid off big time, when I needed to clear one of the physical servers off, I was able to simply shutdown the virtual servers on that host, copy […]

The new GParted LiveCD 0.4.1-2 boots RAM disk now

The new GParted LiveCD (v0.4.1-2) allows booting into a RAM disk so you can eject the CD and shred other servers with it while the first server is still doing long-running shred commands. Very cool! For those who don’t know about it, GParted is a GPL (free and open source) software suite that allows re-partitioning […]

My employer is selling off some old servers

If you can use any of this stuff – ping me; I am sure my boss will take almost any offer. We have three 1U rack mount servers, each powered by a single core Intel P4 Xeon @3.00GHz with 1024K L2 cache, 1GB of memory (two 512MB PC3200 sticks filling two of four DIMM sockets […]

Grumble, Intel Atom 330 is close, but not quite there

I have been quietly searching for a low power, quiet, affordable dual core x86-64 processor/motherboard combination that supports Virtualization Technology so I can load Xen and Linux instances for some home servers. Intel’s new Atom 330 comes very, very close; but lacks the Virtualization support and only comes with the hot and power-hungry 945GC graphics […]

What do you do with a SuperMicro server?

My company has me scrubbing data off a few years old SuperMicro server with 4 Intel Xeon 3.06GHz processors, 4GB of memory (2 sticks of 2GB DDR333 and 6 open slots), 8 Ultra320 bays with hot pluggable sleds, and 7 Seagate Cheetah ST373307LC drives at 10,000rpm with 68.36GB each (the 8th drive failed), Adaptec 2010S […]

Whoa! Terminal.app is tabbed now?!? Cool!

I have no idea how this slipped under the radar, but the Mac OS X Terminal.app, which is probably my most heavily used application, can be used in tabbed mode now! Many friends and co-workers switched to iterm or other terminal programs for this feature prior to Leopard (10.5) because the included Terminal.app only supported […]

Thrilled to recover 13GB of space on my laptop

One of the very few problems with my MacBook Air is that the solid state disk in my original model has only 55.45GB of capacity after formatting. I’ve been running nearly full for months and decided to purge some old data if I could find it this morning. I discovered a duplicate iPhoto Library nested […]

Grumbles about Solaris

Grumble, the fact that modern day and currently patched Solaris 10 does not support the -maxdepth option in it’s included find command is a real pain. So I spent this morning grabbing the findutils package, which meant grabbing the libintl package (it is one of several dependencies) and checking to make sure our already installed […]

Moved an Oracle Database Today

Yesterday and today my co-workers and I moved a big Oracle database from one old Sun V440 (anyone want to buy some Sun gear?) to a newer Sun T2000. I love my work, it’s fascinating to plan minimal downtime, and try to get all the details right on the new server so the users and […]
