Please read this very thought provoking posting on Live Journal by someone called Brithistorian. Thanks to winterbadger for pointing it out. There is this swirl of a perfect storm of ideas coming into my head right now as I simultaneously read “Lies My Teacher Told Me” (particularly about the 50 year rise of racism in America culminating in the 1920s and 1930s) and Brithistorian’s excellent article and see the news about laws our government is passing that basically say congress will look the other way if agents torture suspects. I think it is important to stress that many of the detainees are suspects, just like other suspected criminals.
