Another Glorious Week

It gradually got warmer and warmer here in Virginia, ending in the mid 90s on Saturday, but it has remained cooler than usual and relatively low humidity continues to prevail. The weather has made breafasts on the patio and outdoor dining a joy.

Personal update, wine, and dance after the fold…

Work has been filled with team efforts to get all of our servers out of a data center that we are closing. We are almost done, and three weeks remain to finish. The team of people I work with has pulled together and bonded in ways that are hard to describe, but I love my team and my boss and I love working with this group. It has been a busy, but fantastically rewarding time. Right now I am pulled off some other projects to help everyone get their applications moved to new servers in other data centers, or gracefully shut them down if they are no longer needed.

Tuesday night I volunteered with the Bruce Roemmelt for Delegate campaign, and it was a lot of fun. Bruce is running for the 13th district House of Delegates seat against incumbent Bob Marshall. Marshall is the author of that horrible hate amendment from last year, and wastes our government’s time with dozens of bills each session that would create new laws that govern the behavior of people in their own bedrooms. Most of Marshall’s bills are so silly that his own party does not vote for them, and thus he has had records for introducing the most bills and successfully getting the fewest bills passed into law for most of his tenure as delegate. I am embarrassed to have this man in office.

Roemmelt is a vastly better candidate and wants to focus on fixing some of the problems we have in Virginia rather than legislating our sex lives. He has plans for easing congestion on the roads, plans that are practical and reasonable. He has a record of public service as a veteran and a fire-fighter. He knows the equalizing power of a good public education. Bruce definitely is more conservative than I am, but he’s a vastly better choice than Marshall… and better for the whole state; not just people in the 13th district. If you live in Virginia, you should be helping Roemmelt win the election this November.

Wednesday night I had my regular dance lessons with my awesome teacher at Arthur Murray in Tyson’s Corners (MJ) and then raced over to The Ballroom Studio in Centreville to join a group class on Salsa Rueda that Michele is teaching. MJ is helping me get ready for Fall Freestyles (14th and 15th: big, noisy, exciting competition at Sheraton Premiere in Tyson’s). At the Salsa Rueda class we had a lot of fun dancing something that reminds me of contra dancing (partner changes, lots of social entertainment).

Thursday night Erci took me to sushi then silver class (what a hot Bolero step, thanks Greg) and dance party at Tyson’s.

Friday I had an afternoon lesson with MJ to continue getting ready for Freestyles, then Friday night Erci and I had a lesson with Darryl to prepare for Fall Showcase at The Ballroom Studio (October 13th). Erci went home to study and left me to practice and attend group classes.

Saturday Kate and Erci took me to the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival at Prince William County Fairgrounds where we had a fun (if quite warm) day catching up and shopping for beautiful things. We snagged some balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salsas, jewelry, sculptures for the garden, and a water fountain. On the way home Erci and I stopped at La Grange (which is bicycling distance from our house) and tasted some of their very good wines. We bought half a case including: Pinot Grigio (not as green as most we’ve had), Cuvee Blanc, Norton, Melange, and Meritage.

Saturday night I headed back to The Ballroom Studio for their monthly dance party and had a great time dancing the night away… guys were in short enough supply that I did not manage to say hello to Jeff and Jeannette before they headed home (sorry guys, I was too busy dancing). Sweetwater makes an excellent chaser to a night dancing, though their new margaritas are not as good as the old mix was.
