For years now I have picked up and repeated the Adbusters/BuyNothing crowd’s chant of “by the lobbyists for the corporations” as a cynical replacement of “by the people for the people” that we were taught in school when I grew up.
Larry Lessig gives a brilliant presentation on exactly why this change has been so bad for our democracy, and why we, all of us, need to stand up and speak out together to get our democracy back on track.
As much as I am glad the blatant corruption of the neocons is out of power, we must take responsibility and encourage the current administration not to be corrupted by the power of their offices. We must challenge President Obama to repair our nation and get back to the Jeffersonian ideals of “by the people and for the people” by dismantling the economy of influence that money buys.
