Hard Times Chilli in Herndon is closing

May 22nd, 2008 | Local, Personal |

Sunday is the last day it will be open to the public. They are having a party on Memorial Day, and then you must find another nearby Hard Times for your chilli-fix. Rumors are that the company/person who owns all the property where Hard Times is located is doubling the rents and squeezing businesses out. I do not know if that is true, but it has certainly happened before (my favorite Afghan place, Bamyan, was forced out a few years ago when their rent was doubled suddenly).

My arteries will probably be healthier, but I’ll miss regular bowls of Texas Dry, and half-priced Burger Mondays.
You do all know that the perfect seven course meal is a bowl of chilli and a six-pack, right?

Hmmm - I actually never did like Hard Times. Everytime I tried them their food tasted like cardboard!

I am really surprised to see someone have the opposite opinion of the place!

I’m going to miss our old hang-out!!! HT wuz da bestest!!!! :)

This is the 3rd place THIS YEAR we frequent that has closed down with little or no warning due to lease problems. The first was the Fair Oaks Chicken Out, the second was Joe’s Place (pizza/italian) in Fairfax City, and now Hard Times in Herndon.

What is this area coming to?!?! What idiot jacks rent during a recession? Is it really cheaper to have empty space than to have paying renters? It’s all very odd…

Agreed, though the one the Youngs frequent is in Woodbridge. Love playing Buzztime Trivia.

I worked at that Hard Times for 5 years back in the 90’s and like Herndon in general it it has changed, but very sad to see a Herndon favorite go by the wayside!
