Arthur Murray Showcase, June 2006

What an incredible feeling. I’ve been taking dance lessons for roughly 10 years and I have always had fun with it. Last night I entered the full silver/gold level all-arounds and lucked into Foxtrot, Viennese, Samba, and Bolero! They do not usually do Samba, but it is one of my favorite dances. I danced the best I have ever danced (thanks in no small part to the careful teaching of my teacher, MJ), and had the time of my life. I placed 2nd - so others felt I did ok too, but frankly it was all about the music, the dancing, and the wide open floor!

    Scott,

Congratulations on placing second! Only six months into my training, I am a Bronze Level I dancer at Arthur Murray in Grand Rapids, MI, and I plan to participate in next year’s Showcase. Could lend me your insights as to what to expect, based on your experiences? What did you do to mentally prepare and how did shake the onstage jitters?

I really look forward to your reply.

    Warm regards,
    Leah

Thank you Leah. My best advice to you is frame of mind advice. Get the frame of mind in place for yourself that your showcase routine is your opportunity to enjoy the floor alone with your dance partner, and a chance to enjoy your own routine without interruptions from others.

Don’t worry about the crowd, focus on your dancing and your partner. You’ll be fine. All the events I have been to have very supportive crowds.

If there will be competitive heats as well, that is a little different. There will be others on the floor at the same time, but again; focus on yourself and your partner and your dancing will fall into place.

    Good luck and have fun!
