| Well, I caught the crud that’s going around. I perpetually have stuffed and useless sinuses the last few years, which is a shame because I used to be known for a shockingly keen sense of smell, though certainly not anytime recently. | ![]() |
Wednesday morning I awoke at about 3 am with a dry and pasty tongue from breathing through my mouth only, tried to work a few hours to give my sinuses a chance to drain. Thursday morning I awoke around 4 am with the same conditions, but also with mildly sore ears and throat, so I figured my allergies must have developed into a full blown infection. I managed to get an appointment with the doctor at 2 pm, who agreed with me and prescribed Rhinocort and Clarinex and a general antibiotic. I skipped dance practice Thursday night as I was not feeling up to it. That turned out to be wise, as Friday morning I began spiking fevers and felt much worse. I tried being out sick, but ended up working from home most of the day between cat naps. I can’t stay warm, then I break a fever; that has cycled several times. I am beginning to suspect I caught the crud (virus) though I probably was weakened by the infection. Sigh. At lease Anne was wonderful enough to send a Bossa Nova & Samba: The Gold Collection boxed set with Erci last night, it is cheering me up. Thanks Erci and thanks Anne.

For Whatever it is Worth - When I used to run an Audiology Testing Booth for the Military I get these pilots who’d whine and complain about sinus and ear infections. For them, having any ear/sinus problems would down the pilots so it was a big issue. At the onset of any sinus/ear infection I’d simply tell them to Valsalva through out the day and to take some aspirin, the majority of the time it worked for them quickly.
Valsalva BTW is the same thing you do on an aiplane to equalize the pressure in your middle ear - the pressure opens up your Eustation tubes and promotes drainage. Of course, follow a doctors advice and medication routine. Hope you feel better!

Frequent Valsalva and gargling with salty water and rinsing sinuses with saline solution is part of my regular routine anytime I feel a smidge under-the-weather. It really helps fight off most infections and even some viruses I am convinced.
This time the Crud caught me anyway, though modern medicine (anti-biotics and anti-histamines with decongestants have helped… was feeling better by Sunday.
